Thirty Years in One Home

Lainie bought her house in the Reed neighborhood when she was just starting out. She was in her twenties, early in her career as a hair colorist, and the house was a 900 square foot cottage on a quiet street in Southeast Portland. It was enough.

Over the next three decades, it became more than enough. She married, raised a family, and somewhere along the way the cottage grew into a 2,565 square foot home. A major addition in 2004 more than doubled the footprint, adding bedrooms, bathrooms, a vaulted family room upstairs, and a kitchen designed for a family that used it. The house kept up with her life.

Then the kids grew up and left. And Lainie started thinking about the cottage again.

Not the one she had expanded away from, but the idea of it. Smaller. Simpler. A place sized for the life she actually lives now, not the one she was building back then. She had been thinking about it for a couple of years before she finally called us.

We started where we always start: a conversation about what she actually needed to do to get the house ready, in what order, and what was worth the investment. Lainie was organized and clear-eyed about the process. She moved her belongings into storage, worked through a preparation list, and let us bring in staging to help the house show at its best. It had good bones and a lot of heart. It didn't need much help.

When we listed, four offers came in within three days. It closed generously over asking.

Her new place is a 1,000 square foot cottage in Southeast Portland, close to a good friend and a neighborhood she knew well from her twenties. Not quite full circle, but close enough to feel intentional.
