The Romance of Portland's Eastmoreland Neighborhood

Eastmoreland is traditional east coast meets laid back west coast.

It doesn’t seem to matter how many times I have driven or cycled through Eastmoreland, I am always struck by a sense of awe, each and every time. It is a beautiful, historic Portland neighborhood with a touch of old world charm. Bordered by Sellwood, Woodstock and Reed neighborhoods, Eastmoreland is a more traditional neighborhood. It has a quiet, secluded feel to it with no commercial center. Its homes possess a feeling of history, grandeur and worldliness that embraces the more traditional architectural styles of Colonial, Tudor, English Cottage and Cape Cod. Within this architectural realm, lies its visual power- the lack of bungalows and craftmans here, makes Eastmoreland what it is. With its curvy streets lined in a canopy of mature trees and expansive lawns and gardens, it is a calm and inviting place to call home. It is bordered by Reed College and its beautiful grounds to the north and the Springwater Trail and Johnson Creek to the south. On the east side is the wonderful Woodstock neighborhood with its hip commercial center and westward is the Eastmoreland Golf Course. But within Eastmoreland there may not be a commercial amenities but there are more than a few jewels to behold, like the glorious Crystal Springs Rhododendron Gardens and Berkeley Park. It has two schools, Duniway Elementary School and Holy Family Catholic School. One would be hard pressed to find someone who didn’t agree that this is one of the most romantic places to live in Portland.

A Bit of History

Eastmoreland was named for a local real estate developer, Judge J.C. Moreland and it was formed in the early twentieth century making it one of Portland’s older neighborhoods.

The Eastmoreland Vibe

Eastmoreland has a bit of an old world, magical vibe about it with its histocial homes, rolling hills and tree lined streets. There is a strong sense of community here that is not only loyal but also active and community-conscious. There are lots of cyclists, baby strollers and dog walkers around. Homeownership is prominent in this affluent neighborhood, consisting mostly of families and young professionals of a more liberal persuasion.
