Southwest Portland Neighborhoods
Hillside streets, older trees, and some of Portland's best parks. Here's what to know about SW.
Wooded, Hilly, and Close to Everything
Southwest Portland sits in the West Hills, which means most of it is elevated, wooded, and quieter than other parts of the city. The neighborhoods range from the dense, walkable streets of Multnomah Village to the larger lots and hillside homes of Arlington Heights and Sylvan Highlands. The housing stock is a mix of mid-century ranches, Tudor revivals, and newer construction, with prices that generally run higher than the eastside.
The green space here is significant. Tryon Creek State Natural Area runs through the middle of SW Portland with miles of hiking and biking trails. Council Crest Park sits at one of the highest points in the city with views of four major peaks on a clear day. The Oregon Zoo and Portland Japanese Garden are both in Washington Park, which also connects to the Wildwood Trail system.
OHSU anchors the area and brings a steady professional population. Schools in SW Portland and the adjacent Beaverton and Lake Oswego districts tend to rate well, which draws families from across the metro. Getting downtown takes ten to fifteen minutes by car or MAX, depending on where you are in the district.
On the buying side, SW Portland generally runs higher than the eastside, with the West Hills and Arlington Heights and Portland Heights carrying the steepest prices. Multnomah Village and Hillsdale offer more accessible entry points with smaller lots and older homes. New inventory is limited, so buyers who find something they like tend to move quickly. It's a market that rewards preparation.
